May 2009 Newsletter

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

The other day, the Curry Focus team was talking about what searches were being made on the website. Luckily we keep a track of this information in the database. In the blink of an eye, a quick bit of SQL coding brought the answer.

In the past month, in descending number of searches, the following were the top searches.

01 – chicken curry

02 – masala paste

03 – chicken

04 – chicken saag

05 – potato

06 – xacutti

07 – chicken pasanda

08 – lamb

09 – masala

10 – chicken kasmiri

You can see that the top search was for chicken curry. That’s no real surprise considering that the chicken curries are nearly always the top recipes that are viewed by the website visitors.

Indeed, 5 out of the top 10 searches included the word “chicken”.

It’s interesting to see what the visitors were looking for from this list. Some were looking for a type of curry (chicken curry and lamb). Some were looking for a type of dish (xacutti) and some were looking for a specific dish (chicken pasanda and chicken kasmiri). And quite a few people were looking for a curry with potato in it.

We don’t have any chicken pasanda or chicken kashmiri recipes on the websites yet. If you have a good recipe for one of these, why not share it with us? A lot of people will be grateful.

Try To Lose Weight By Eating Curry

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

The internet is buzzing with stories about the recent announcement of the result of experiments where mice were fed with curcumin and the mice lost fat and weight.

Three weeks ago we wrote an article about this, called “Lose Weight with Turmeric and Curcumin”.

This exciting development has been picked up by lots of organizations, including the Times of India, the Marie-Claire magazine and the Los Angeles Times.

As you no doubt know, turmeric is an ingredient in lots of different curries.

More tests and experiments are planned and, no doubt, testing on people will take place sometime soon. If the results of the tests are positive, you can be sure to see a new range of curcumin-based weight loss and diet products arriving in the market.

Until then, you can eat a good curry with the thought that maybe you can lose a bit of weight in the process.

Review of the Chicken and Mushroom Pulao Recipe

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Hi, Ray here again.

My girlfriend adores mushrooms and had been hinting that I should make a mushroom curry for a few months now.

I browsed through the great Curry Focus recipes and found a great looking recipe for Chicken and Mushroom Pulao.

The recipe called for chicken thighs, which I think are a lot tastier than chicken breasts.

And the recipe also had vegetables in it, with green beans as well as mushrooms. It must be a health curry if it has so many vegetables!!

It only took about 30 minutes to prepare the ingredients, Most of the time being taken up with me peeling the mushrooms before chopping them up. I prefer to peel mushrooms rather than just wiping them clean.

Like most of the Curry Focus recipes, this was a very simple recipe to make.

The only problem I had was in getting the rice cooked. I often have problems with cooking rice with the absorption method and this time was no exception. Maybe I have the simmer going at the wrong heat level. Maybe I’m just nervous about covering up a cooking meal and leaving it alone for 10-15 minutes without checking on the progress. Anyway, I needed the last phase to be 30 minutes instead of the recipe time of 15 minutes. And I needed to add a cup of boiling water to stop the rice from sticking to the frying pan.

The rice was eventually cooked OK and I dished up the pulao to the keen and hungry dinner guests with a gall of good wine.

This is a delightfully tasty pulao dish with a lovely taste of cloves and delicious chicken thigh. The rice was well cooked. And I couldn’t spot the cloves so two lucky people managed to get two cloves each.

Everyone loved the dish and it received a rating of 8 out of 10 with a heat/spice rating of very mild.

I’m sure that you won’t be disappointed with this recipe if you like pulao.

And did my girlfriend enjoy the mushroom curry? Well, unfortunately, she had a last minute unexpected dinner date with some friends that she had to be at. So she didn’t get to try the curry. How ironic was that?

Tiffin Time

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

In India, tiffin means lunch, a snack or a light meal.

There are thousands of tiffin vendors who pour into the big Indian cities and sell their delicious lunches to hungry office workers. Tiffin is delivered in containers and the containers are collected later on in the day so that they can be cleaned and used again the next day.

A new twist on tiffin delivery has been introduced in Melbourne with tiffin being brought to the office on specially converted 3-wheeled bikes.

The “Tifins” company started trading about a year ago and was the creation of two brothers who immigrated to Australia from Mumbai. Business is now booming with around 250 meals being delivered to offices in the city center every day.

The 3-wheeled bikes can get through the Melbourne traffic amazingly quickly and the bikes have an insulated box that can hold up to 50 tiffin containers.

The tiffin food is hot and delicious and cheap.

Tiffin is a big hit in India and Melbourne. Where next?

Review of Chas Chicken Curry Recipe

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Hi, Ray here again.

I had a very busy weekend with lots to do and people to see. I would be out of the house for most of Sunday and Sunday is curry day.

I went through the Curry Focus recipes, looking for one that I could make on Saturday and heat up on Sunday night. Chas’s Chicken Curry recipe looked like the one to try.

I knew that I wouldn’t be able to find any Naga Bih Jaloka chillies but I had some dried Kashmiri chillies in the cupboard that I could use as a substitute. I hadn’t heard of a Naga Bih Jaloka chilli and think it must be a lot more powerful than the Kasmiri chilli.

The recipe was very easy to follow and before the curry was made pretty quickly and I went out for the rest of the day.

Sunday night arrived and I got home from my excursions an hour before the scheduled dining time. I more than enough time to prepare the cilantro, heat up the curry and cook some basmati rice.

I served up the curry and we settled down to eat it.

To be honest, the curry was disappointing. The curry was pretty bland and about all that could be tasted was the cilantro. I don’t like using curry paste and the curry paste that I had obviously didn’t add much to the flavor.

The curry received a poor taste score of 5.5 out of 10 with a spice/heat rating of “mild to medium”.

Lose Weight with Turmeric and Curcumin

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

Curcumin, found in turmeric, has again reached the health news headlines.

A couple of articles about turmeric and curcumin have already appeared on the Curry Focus website - “Turmeric is it Spice or Medicine?” and “An Update on Curcumin Turmeric and Your Health”.

This time curcumin has been found to be a potential wonder weight loss aid.

Mice have been given doses of curcumin with their food.

And the mice that were given curcumin lost body fat and weight.

The experiment has not yet been tried with people but we’re sure that it won’t be too long before it does.

The research is well documented on the internet, such as on the Nutra Ingredients website.

Seeing that turmeric is an often used spice in curries, will we one day see weight loss diets that advocate eating a curry in order to lose weight?
